Join expert, David Edge, to discover how decoration and display shaped weapons and armour across India, the Middle East, and the Ottoman Empire during the 16th to the 19th centuries.
You’ll learn about the most common decorative embellishments found on metal arms and armour and how they were created, while gaining insights into regional differences and historical context. During the presentation, there will be a unique opportunity to handle a range of decorated weapons and selected pieces of armour before looking at a small selection of objects in our outstanding arms and armour collection.
About the speaker: David Edge is Armourer Emeritus at the Wallace Collection. He joined the Collection in 1975 as Metals Conservator, but for many years he was also Armoury Curator, until appointed Head of Conservation in 2004. David officially retired in 2020, but he continues to speak widely on the history, conservation and analysis of arms and armour. He is always being keen to promote and encourage wider knowledge of the subject.
Take part at the museum: This demonstration and tour will start in the Meeting Room, Lower Ground Floor, and move on to galleries throughout the museum.
