It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of our friend and former colleague, Derek Purnell, on Saturday 2 August 2025.
Derek joined the Wallace Collection in 2014 as Director of Public Engagement and became Chief Operating Officer in 2017. During his time with the museum, he championed music and ballet collaborations, developed our learning and display programmes, and oversaw the extension of our exhibition galleries, establishing the vibrant public engagement programming we continue to deliver today. Derek always brought a balance of pragmatism, warmth and humour, and he will be sadly missed.
Derek’s distinguished career in the arts began on stage when he joined Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet in 1973. Over more than a decade with the company he performed leading roles in both the classical and contemporary repertory. His deep understanding of performance and his love of the arts later guided him into a career in cultural leadership, where he brought energy, vision and care to every role he undertook. From 1989 to 2005, Derek served as Chief Executive of Birmingham Royal Ballet, steering the company through one of the most significant periods in its history. He oversaw its relocation from London to Birmingham and its transition to an independent organisation, ensuring its artistic and financial sustainability for the future. On leaving the Wallace Collection in 2020, he became Director of Strawberry Hill House and Garden, guiding the historic site with the same dedication and care.
Derek will be remembered not only for his considerable achievements but also for his kindness, generosity and the unfailing support he offered to colleagues and friends. He believed deeply in making the arts and heritage accessible to all and worked tirelessly to create opportunities for audiences to connect with culture in meaningful ways. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family and to all who had the privilege to know and work with him.
