Three years after becoming Duke of Florence, Cosimo I de’ Medici decided to move his court from the family palazzo on the Via Larga to the historic seat of the Florentine Republic: the Palazzo della Signoria, also called the Palazzo Vecchio. Not only did Cosimo structurally extend the building, but he embarked on a major redecorating project. The building’s new decorations were intended to laud Cosimo and his Medici ancestors, as well as legitimise his rule over Florence.  

In this talk, join Dr Julia van Zandvoort in exploring the various layers of decorations that transformed the Palazzo Vecchio from a symbol of the Florentine Republic to the epitome of Medici power. 

From 18 November 2026 until 21 March 2027, the Housekeeper’s Room will host our display, Cosimo I de’ Medici: Art and Dynasty.
