Discover the history of mail and make your own sample of armour in this one-day workshop with expert mail-maker, Mark Hale.

Explore how different forms of this armour were assembled, worn and used across the centuries, through the handling of real and replica mail, and examples of the tools used to make it. You'll then learn the basic skills needed to join pre-made metal rings together, gaining first-hand experience of the fundamental processes involved in creating mail armour.

This is an introductory workshop and no previous experience is required.

Joining Information and Format: For ages 18+. This workshop will take place in the Learning Studio, Lower Ground Floor. We recommend participants bring a packed lunch. When walking through the museum, food must be packed away in a bag and liquids carried in a sealed bottle, flask or travel mug.

About the tutor: Mark Hale’s interest in mail led him to form his company, Cap-à-pie, which uses mass-produced rings to create items for the re-enactment market. Regularly liaising with curators and conservators to develop historically accurate rings, with a particular interest in historical tooling methods and manufacturing techniques, he has also contributed to museum displays and props for the TV and film industry.
