This October we celebrate Black History Month through the stories, voices, and histories connected to our collection.

Govaert Flinck’s Young Archer depicts a young black man in fanciful, historicising costume. Considered a character study or 'tronie' rather than a portrait, it is a rare and compelling image that places a black sitter at the centre of the composition, offering a valuable glimpse into 17th-century Dutch society.
