Paris: a city of luxury, fashion and the 'douceur de vivre' recalled Talleyrand after the revolution.  But also a city of trade men, riots, the Philosophes and the Encyclopedie.  Over five-days this course will look at events and ideas, the Parisians' way of life and some of their daily occupations, including the Salon and the art of conversation, furnishing a house, conceptes of cleanliness and reading and writing. Illustrated talks will be complemented by gallery visits to study the glorious furniture, porcelain, bronzes and objets d'art in the galleries of the Wallace Collection. Taught by Christylle Phillips.
