The Wallace has one of the greatest collections of French paintings in Britain. This four-week course, taught by Richard Stemp, will examine these works in depth, placing them in the context of the development of French art from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries through a series of lectures, each of which will be followed by a visit to the galleries for close examination of the paintings themselves.
Week 1: The Seventeenth Century: Claude, Poussin and Philippe de Champaigne
Week 2: The Eighteenth Century- the first generation: Watteau and Lancret
Week 3: The Eighteenth Century - the next generation: Boucher and Fragonard
Week 4: The Romantics and beyond: Delaroche, Scheffer, Corot and Rousseau.
