Time | 11.00–13.00 BST |
Location | Online (Zoom) |
Tutor | Clare Ford-Wille |
Trace the development of the Grand Tour and learn about its impact on European art. We’ll see that although there were dangers involved, international travel became more popular during the 16th and 17th centuries as pilgrims, artists, sculptors and architects set off in search of work and education. We’ll also consider how wealthy young men, inspired to complete their education with extensive travels around European cities, established the Grand Tour in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many of these ‘grand tourists’ brought back paintings and sculptures, and we’ll discuss how this influenced British taste as well as the formation of aristocratic collections like the Wallace.
