In 1775, the Frenchman Claude Martin arrived in Lucknow to become superintendent of the Lucknow arsenal. A military man and keen collector of both paintings and arms and armour, his career forms a link between the Indian arms and armour in the Wallace Collection and the paintings in the Forgotten Masters exhibition.
After a lecture on collecting arms and armour in eighteenth-century Lucknow, we will tour the Oriental Armoury, where the exceptional Lucknow swords, daggers and armours are on display. This is followed by entry to the Forgotten Masters exhibition, host to some of the finest paintings commissioned by Claude Martin himself. Taught by Arthur Bijl, Assistant Curator of Ottoman, Middle Eastern and Asian Arms and Armour.
