Description: From works by Rubens to Velázquez and Van Dyck, explore the dramatic and exuberant Baroque style, which dominated Western Europe’s architecture, painting and sculpture throughout the 17th century.
From Catholic Italy and France, to the Protestant Netherlands and central Europe, Baroque’s presence can be seen in many captivating and theatrical works. Contextualising art seen in the Wallace Collection, we’ll trace variations of the style’s emergence in Rome, through the works of Caravaggio and Bernini, before focusing on artists further afield, including Van Dyck, Hals and Rembrandt. Through this extensive exploration, you’ll gain appreciation of the diverse manifestations of this enigmatic style.
