(Fernando Trueba, 2010, colour, 95 minutes)
In honour of our current exhibition El Greco to Goya: Spanish Masterpieces from the Bowes Museum, the Wallace Collection presents a selection of recent masterpieces of Spanish cinema. Oscar-winner Fernando Trueba is one of Spain's most admired directors. Chico & Rita marks a departure from his usual style in that it is animated with stunning visuals from Spanish artist Javier Mariscal. It is a romantic tale of an aspiring singer Rita (voiced by Limara Meneses) and a pianist Chico (voiced by Eman Xor Oña), who form a duo in Cuba, are forced to separate and seek each other out years later. With an original soundtrack by legendary Cuban pianist, bandleader and composer Bebo Valdés, and featuring music by jazz legends Thelonious Monk, Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie and Freddy Cole.
