Cuyp’s Shipping on the Maas represents the 'wijdschip' or passenger ferry that ran between Rotterdam and the artist's native city of Dordrecht (seen on the right). Cuyp shows the vessel's sail filled by a strong breeze as it ploughs into choppy waves. Recent conservation work has enhanced the crispness of the work's composition and the artist's use of a naturalistic colour range. Cuyp's paintings formed an essential part of the British picture gallery from the 18th century onwards.
