Lemoyne was one of the greatest French history painters of the eighteenth century. This allegorical painting is one of his greatest masterworks. It can be seen as his artistic testament: painted immediately after he had been nominated First Painter to the King and only finished immediately before his suicide, it encapsulates Lemoyne's vision of painting and his own perception of his position in the French art establishment. Please note that a maximum of 25 people can attend talks. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis. Free, no need to book.

Talks: Christoph Vogtherr, 4 and 18 November at 1pm
