How to Search Wallace Live
There are three ways of searching Wallace Live: Quick Find, Search and Advanced Search.
Quick Find, located on the top left side of the screen is a drop down list of predefined searches grouping objects together by theme, subject or material such as Ceramics, Furniture, Armour for Joust and Tournaments or Views of Venice. Quick Finds are being expanded to and added to.
Search enables you to search across the whole of Wallace Live using a single search box. Simply type one or more words into the search box and click Search or press Enter on your keyboard.
Search words and phrases
The simplest search is based on single words or names such as landscape or Rembrandt. You can also enter phrases or strings of words. All the words in a phrase or string must be matched in a record for it to be included in the search result.
A phrase must be surrounded by double quotes("), for example "The Laughing Cavalier" in order for Wallace Live to recognise it as a phrase rather than a string of words. A phrase must find an exact match in our database to produce a search result.
A string is a list of words separated by spaces, for example pumpkin peaches plums. This search string will return all records containing the words pumpkin and peaches and plums anywhere in the record.
You can combine single words and phrases for more complex searches. For example: pumpkin peaches "flowers and grapes" will find all records containing the words pumpkin and peaches anywhere, and also the phrase "flowers and grapes".
If you are unsure how to spell a word or you want to search for similar words you can use an asterisk (*) to partially define a word.
c*o will find Canaletto, Cano and Caravaggio
p*t will find portrait, pot
Wildcards do not work as the first character of a word and are ignored in phrase searches.
More advanced searches can be defined by using search operators in combination with single words and phrases. They allow words and phrases to be combined through the use of AND, OR or NOT.
The AND operator links words and matches results where both exist. Must be all upper case.
Note: This is the default behaviour of the application, i.e. Virgin child is the same as Virgin AND child.
|Virgin AND child|
|OR||The OR operator links two words and matches results where either exists. Must be all upper case.||Virgin OR child|
|NOT||The NOT operator excludes results that contain the word after NOT. Must be all upper case.||Madonna NOT child|
Search words can also be joined and grouped via the use of brackets to define the precedence order. By default, the following precedence rules are applied: NOT, followed by AND, followed by OR.
(Rubens NOT Murillo) AND (Madonna OR Virgin)
Searches for all records containing Rubens NOT Murillo AND either Madonna OR Virgin.
The Advanced Search allows you to search for information in specific database fields using in either The Collection or Artist / Maker sections. You can enter search terms into more than one field.
For example, if you searched Madonna in the Title field you would only find results with the word Madonna in the Title field, not records that contained the word Madonna in any other field.
The same search rules apply here as in Search All fields, e.g. wildcards, phrases and strings, except that here the search is only performed on the selected field.
Some fields with drop down lists allow you to select multiple values, e.g. Artist/Maker, by pressing the Control key. If more than one value is specified, at least one of the selected search criteria must be found to return a search result. To deselect a value, use the Control key and click on the selected entry.

Finding too few or too many records?
If you are getting too many records that are not a close match for what you are looking for try using more or different search words in Search All Fields or use Advanced Search to add more criteria to your search and thus refine the results. In Advanced Search you can limit your search, for example by Collection, Artist or Period.
If there are too few records in your results set try removing or changing some of your search words to broaden the possible matches. Check that you have cleared all fields from a previous search.
Still can't find what you are looking for?
Wallace Live does not yet contain every work of art in the Wallace Bequest. We are adding new records and images on a regular basis and are aiming to have the entire collection online during 2010.
If you want to know where a work of art is displayed in Hertford House perform the search and select Detail View from the display options. The room name of the current display location is given.
The Wallace Collection does not provide valuations on objects, either those in its collections or those owned by others.
