The Wallace Collection is committed to helping people in their careers. It offers a limited number of voluntary placements each year.
The Wallace Collection, London, offers three-month internships for undergraduates or MA students interested in developing a career in museum education. The internship will give the postholder valuable work experience and an insight into how education projects are run in a busy national museum. It includes helping with special events and education outreach projects as well as day-to-day duties such as assisting with the arrival of school groups in the galleries, data entry of statistics and evaluation forms and stocking the Education Studio. This is a part-time internship (approximately three days per week, usually weekdays but there will be the option to help with some weekend events). There is no remuneration but travel expenses within central London will be paid.
Internships run; January-March, April-June, July-September and October-December and short listing of applications takes place the month prior to the placement starting (e.g. applications are short listed in December for the January-March internship). Please see below for details.

EDUCATION AT THE WALLACE COLLECTION
The Education Department was founded in October 1998. It consists of the Head of Education, two Education Officers, a School and Group Co-ordinator and an Assistant. The Education Department is part of the Public Engagement Department.
The Head of Education (full time) is responsible for creating and implementing the education strategy, managing certain programmes, including those for adults and families, and overseeing those of other members of staff.
The Senior Education Officer for Community and Access Programmes (full time) runs and develops programmes for community groups and individuals currently under-represented among the Wallace Collection's visitors, including visitors with disabilities.
The Senior Education Officer for School Programmes (part time) is responsible for creating and managing the primary and secondary school programme.
The School and Group Co-ordinator (full time) manages all arrangements for school and groups visits, organises all general guided tours and private guided tours of the Collection delivered by the team of volunteer guide lecturers, manages the databases for the schools programmes, answers all telephone inquiries and performs day to day administrative tasks.
The Education Assistant for Public Programmes (part time) helps the Head of Education with the administration of the public programme and manages our popular adult art classes
Interns help with a variety of things, including:
- Supporting Education Department freelance educators in greeting groups, organising groups in the galleries and preparing materials for sessions
- Supporting the Education Department freelance educators on outreach sessions in schools and other locations
- Assisting freelance educators with practical art sessions for schools and community audience
- Research as necessary: for example researching organisations and groups with which we might work, researching objects for gallery trails
- Photographing projects
- Helping to keep the Education Studio tidy and well-stocked
- Data-entry of statistics and evaluation forms
The Senior Education Officer for School Programmes will oversee the work of the Education Department Intern, but as the internship will require involvement in a number of different projects he or she will work closely with most members of the department.
This internship is designed for people at thinking about exploring a career in museums. Interns in the department:
- Must be currently studying Art History, Fine Art or a related field
- have some experience of working with children
- have good communication skills and ability to work with the public
- have good organisational skills and are computer-literate
REMUNERATION AND EXPENSES
There is no remuneration but travel expenses within zones 1-3 will be paid. This internship will give the postholder valuable work experience and an insight into how education projects are run in a busy national museum Education Department.
