More than mere objects of war, bladed weapons have also been, throughout the centuries, works of art, handicrafts and jewellery; symbols of power, religious devotion and social status. Above all, they have frequently revealed themselves as objects with great intrinsic beauty. All of these facets are present in this Jorge Caravana collection, taking us on a trip to the East where the Portuguese were present throughout history, from Morocco to Japan. In this catalogue are included not only the representations and descriptions of the pieces themselves, but also a number of specialised articles which help place the pieces in their artistic, historical, social and religious contexts, so that we can look at weapons as something much more than mere objects of war but also as historical documents which are a part of human heritage.
This catalogue accompanied the exhibition Rituais de Poder. Armas Orientais. Colecção Jorge Caravana, which was held at the Museu de Évora, Portugal from 13 March to 13 June 2010.
