Van Gogh and Sir Richard Wallace's Pictures
Martin Bailey, Author of 'Young Vincent: …Van Gogh's Years in England'
During his stay in England between 1875 and 1876 Vincent Van Gogh was a regular museum visitor.
One of the places he visited was the Bethnal Green Museum in the East End of London where, between 1872 and 1875, the art collection of Sir Richard Wallace was exhibited. In letters to his brother Theo, Van Gogh expressed admiration for four paintings in Wallace's collection: Margaret at the Fountain and The Return of the Prodigal Son by Ary Scheffer, The Forest of Fontainbleu by Theodore Rousseau and The Halt by Ernest Meissonier.
This catalogue, based on new research, documents the Wallace Collection's association with Van Gogh and the paintings he admired.
