MA in Eighteenth-Century French Decorative Arts
Organised jointly by the Wallace Collection and the Courtauld Institute, University of London, this course offers an introduction to the fine and decorative arts as they came together in the decoration of secular interiors in eighteenth-century France.
The course is divided into two balanced components: the first involves the study of the materials, technologies and institutions that governed the production of furniture and furnishings for the interior; the second analyses the interior as a site for display, use and the enjoyment of
luxury goods.
Attention is given to the meaning and representation of craft and industry as well as to their practices, while consideration is also given to the ways in which decorative objects were brought together and arranged within an architectural framework, and to the meanings that attached themselves to the resulting patterns of distinction. Issues of class and gender are of concern throughout. A trip to France takes place at the end of the autumn term. A good reading knowledge of French is essential.
