Vincenzo Foppa
(1427/30-1515/6)
Born in Brescia, the son of Giovanni da Sandrina da Bagnolo, a tailor. He may have studied with Squarcione in Padua, and his earlier work also suggests the influences of Mantegna and Jacopo Bellini. From 1456 to 1490 he was based in Pavia, though he frequently worked in Genoa and Milan, for example, in that period.
He returned to Brescia in 1490 and his later work reflects an awareness of both Bramante and Leonardo. There are documented works from 1458 to 1514. Foppa was the principal Lombard master of the quattrocento.
