Fangjia, March & April 2008
This extremely rare archaic Chinese bronze is a 3,000 year old ritual wine vessel, called a fangjia. It comes from the Late Shang Dynasty (13th-11th century BC). This is the first time that, outside of Compton Verney, this unique piece has been seen in this country.
Ewer and Basin, May – August 2008
A riot of mannerist decoration, interwoven with scenes from the Old Testament, this 16th-century German silver-gilt ewer and basin must have been commissioned by an extremely wealthy patron. During the 18th century, by now known as ‘the Cellini silver’, the set was acquired in Florence for the famous Panshanger collection.
