The Wallace Collection is the sole venue for this stunning exhibition of one of the finest collections of Medieval and Renaissance silversmiths’ and goldsmiths’ work in private hands.
Mainly formed between 1870 and 1930, the collection includes masterpieces from princely collections, church treasuries and civic institutions in England, Germany, Italy and beyond, including the Dolgellau chalice and paten from the Royal Collection. Many incorporate rare or exotic materials such as polished nautilus shells, early Chinese porcelain and carved rock crystal.
Outstanding works of craftsmanship, many of the exhibits also reflect the intellectual preoccupations of the age in which they were made. There will be free guided tours of this exhibition every Thursday at 1pm and a free family trail to accompany this exhibition. A related display on ‘Construction and Techniques in Renaissance Silver’ can be seen in our Conservation Gallery.
Please see the Get Drawing! and Family Activities sections for information on other exhibition-related activities.
