The Adoration of the Magi, School of Jean I Pénicaud or Workshop, Limoges, France, c.1525 - c.1530
This small, richly decorated painted enamel plaque depicts the Adoration of the Magi, a popular subject at Christmas time. The infant Christ leans forward inquisitively from the Virgin’s lap to examine Caspar’s gift of gold. The younger magi, Melchior and Balthazar, wait to present their gifts of frankincense and myrrh. Joseph, surprised by the exalted visitors, observes the scene. There is a wealth of symbolism and detail in this exquisite seasonal treasure.
