The Augsburg Service, Augsburg, Germany, 1767 - 1773 This spectacular silver-gilt toilette service is one of the largest surviving services made at Augsburg in the eighteenth-century. It consists not only of toilette items but also an inkstand and breakfast dishes as the morning ceremony of preparing for the day often took a very long time. Augsburg was one of the leading centres of silver production in Europe where high quality objects were produced. This service, although stylistically coherent, was made by various masters within a few years; we know their names and dates because almost each piece is marked. What we do not know is for whom the service was made, but such an exceptionally fine and extensive ensemble suggests a person of a high rank. The service is well preserved and we even have its original travel box. Not normally displayed, the box will be shown during the talks.
