In the years around 1710 Antoine Watteau invented what was to become a new genre of painting. A fête galante depicts outdoor gatherings, mainly of young city-dwellers. Its main elements are conversation, music and - often through the presence of costumed actors - theatre. This lecture, by the Director of the Wallace Collection, Christoph Vogtherr, complements the exhibition of the same name curated by him and currently on show at the Musée Jacquemart André in Paris until July 2014.
