The classical tradition, which influenced Western culture for over 2,000 years, began in the city-states of Greece. Their art and architecture laid down principles that were followed in subsequent centuries, with earliest forms of pottery and sculpture being produced nearly 3,000 years ago. Marble and bronze sculpture developed to reveal an extraordinary sense of realism, while the technical simplicity and aesthetic sophistication of temple designs developed an architectural language that endured well into the 20th century.

Part of the Art of Ancient Civilisations lecture series, organised by the Art Fund and taking place in the Lecture Theatre at the Wallace Collection
