Treasure of the Month: Scallop-shaped snuff box, Jean Ducrollay, Paris, 1744

This cleverly designed gold box combines the shape of a shell with the fan-tail feathers of a peacock. It was used for snuff, a powdered tobacco much used by the aristocracy in the 18th century. A wonderful example of Ducrollay's craftsmanship, it would have been a prized possession of the duc d'Aumont (1709-82), who once owned it. Talks: Carmen Holdsworth Delgado, 6 and 20 August at 1pm
