Murillo's 'Adoration of the Shepherds' is at once powerful and simple: shepherds adore the Christ child with prayers and gestures of awe and humility. A group of bystanders add an intimate, domestic tone to the scene, further reinforced by the remarkable still life. In style and subject matter, it epitomises Murillo's lasting appeal: his sympathetic portrayal of humanity, his 'warm' ('calido') colours and his delicate, expressive brushwork. Talks will be given by Lucy Davis on 12 and 25 February at 1pm Free, no need to book. Talks in the galleries are strictly limited to 25 people with places allocated on a first come first served basis.
