Made for Marie Leczinska, the wife of Louis XV, this commode exemplifies the taste for incorporating Oriental lacquer into French furniture that developed in the mid-eighteenth century. The shape of the commode, with its swelling front and sides, and the exuberance of the gilt bronze mounts are characteristic of the rocaille, the dominant style in France in the 1740s and 1750s.

Talks in the galleries are strictly limited to 25 people with places allocated on
a first come first served basis.
