The Neapolitan painter Salvator Rosa described the subject of this picture in his own words: '...the Cumaean Sibyl who asks Apollo to live as many years as the grains of sand that she had taken in her two hands from the seashore.' Rosa uses all the expressive potential of landscape to amplify this ominous episode.
